Berkey and Gay

I was asked by a friend to help out an estate sale he was holding. He purchased the contents of his neighbor's home who passed away. A portion of the furnishing was a Berkey and Gay bedroom set. Part of the fun of the dealing in antiques and collectibles is the researching of new found treasures. I found the following website helpful to begin my research.

A few books on the matter helped out too.

We eventually settled for $1000, and sold the set to another neighbor.

Milk Glass---many questions.

One area of collecting I have yet to remotely conquer is milk glass. I remember going to an estate sale in the Hollywood area and purchased numerous pieces of milk glass tumblers for 50 cents a piece. I was proud of my find, and felt as if I discovered a hidden treasure chest. My balloon was deflated when I did my research and realized that I paid exactly what the items were worth. Milk glass is an opaque or translucent milky white or colored glass, blown or pressed into a wide variety of shapes. The quality and range of value varies so much with milk glass that I recommed that one familiarize themselves with varieties of such before investing any substantial amount of money. These companies all made milk glass that is widely collected today.

Hazel Atlas Morrocan Glass

I see these pieces quite often. They are usually a one off piece of a whole. Hazel Atlas (also referred to as Hazel Ware) produced the Amethyst (purple toned) glassware in the 60's. It is not (and I mean in now way) depression glass. If you come across such pieces.....pick them up if the price is right. They can be used in formal or casual settings and will continue to grace the tabletops of our homes. Hazel Ware Moroccan Amethyst Glass Note: Do not confuse these pieces with Newport Depression Glass
